The City of Leavenworth, Kansas contracts with Catholic Community Services (CCS) to offer an Emergency Housing Assistance program to families and individuals in need. The program provides counseling and valuable referrals to low-income city residents who are experiencing a housing emergency. The Rural Housing Repair and Rehabilitation Grants Program provides loans and grants to very low-income homeowners to repair or improve their homes or to remove health or safety hazards. Applicants must be 62 years of age or older and must have incomes below 50% of the area median. That can be up to $27,000 for seniors in Maryland, which includes most seniors I know. Called the Mortgage Insurance – Housing In Older, Declining Areas and referred to as Program #14.123 in the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance, this program helps in the purchase or rehabilitation of housing in older, declining urban areas. When the average person hears the drumbeat that the budget has a $500 billion dollars deficit, they can only think of how, if in their own personal budget was this much in debt, they would never think of spending more money, no matter how good the idea was . But the House of Representatives just approved of an extra $6.7 billion for an additional 13 weeks of unemployment benefits. The Missouri Advantage Repayment Incentive Option (MARIO) will provide up to $10,000 in student loan forgiveness for college students who graduate with a math or science degree and go to work for a Missouri life science related company. Called Direct Housing – Natural Disaster and referred to as Program #10.445 in the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance, this program assists qualified lower income rural families to meet emergency assistance needs resulting from natural disaster to buy, build, rehabilitate, or improve dwellings in rural areas. Funds are only available to the extent that funds are not provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The Army College Loan Repayment program allows participants to pay off federally insured student loans when they enlist in the Army, in a qualifying job. To be eligible, applicants must enlist for three years on Active Duty or six years in the Army Reserve and their loan status must not be in default. For Active Duty Soldiers, participants can receive up to $65,000 to repay college loans. For Army Reserve Soldiers, individuals can receive up to $20,000 to repay college loans.
