FirstEnergy established the Metropolitan Edison Company Sustainable Energy Fund and the Penelec Sustainable Energy Fund in 2000. The fund is divided as follows: two-thirds on venture capital and business lending; one-third as an endowment fund focused on environmental grant-making. Loans are available to commercial and industrial customers, non-profits and schools. The purpose of the fund is to promote: the development and use of renewable energy and clean energy technologies; energy conservation and efficiency; sustainable energy businesses; and projects which improve the environment in the Penelec region.
