$20,000 Loan Forgiveness
This program is for health worker participants who will enter into a service contract for two years with the Indian Health Service, a Federal health program for American Indians and Alaska Natives. All health professions are eligible to apply to the Loan Repayment Program however special consideration is given to nurses, nurse practitioners, mental health and physician priority medical specialties. The LRP will pay an additional 20 percent annually to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to offset the increased tax liability incurred by the participant. To ensure that there are enough trained health professionals, the Indian Health Service provides for the repayment of loans to those professionals who agree to serve in an Indian Health Service Facility. Money can be used for the repayment of student loans. The minimum period of participation is two years, and the maximum loan payment is $20,000 per year.
